Clearinghouse for Sport

The Clearinghouse for Sport is the information and knowledge sharing platform for Australian sport. It maintains a record of, and information on, former AIS scholarship athletes and coaches, as well as on the AIS sport programs themselves.

History of scholarships at the AIS

The establishment of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) was announced by Hon. Robert Ellicott, the Minister for Home Affairs and the Environment on 25 January 1980 and it was officially opened by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Malcolm Fraser on 26 January 1981.

The aim was to develop elite sport in Australia by providing facilities and funding to sporting organisations and potential elite athletes.

From 1981 to 2013 the AIS managed athlete scholarship programs across a wide range of sports, some for the entire period, others for shorter time frames.

Selection criteria for scholarships varied, but most athletes were recognised by the relevant National Sporting Organisation (NSO) as elite or having development potential. Benefits included access to world-class facilities, coaching, and sport science and medicine services; support for education and career development, travel, and equipment; and full board or living-out allowances.

Programs mainly operated from the AIS campus in Canberra, but some were based in other states or territories depending on facilities and support available.

In 2012, it was announced that NSOs would take full responsibility for their athlete development and training programs, and direct AIS scholarships were discontinued in 2013.
