Make it easy to get involved

Watch this: Make it easy to get involved

"The trouble is sport, they think that their doors are open, but they're not. They're really a closed-up shop...in terms of letting others into their clubs to take on roles."

Why is it important to Make it easy to get involved?

  • Finding and getting involved in sport volunteering is often confusing. Opportunities rely on personal connections, and many volunteers aren't sure how to contribute or know what's expected.
  • Some of those who try to get involved, often face dead ends
  • Making sport volunteering simple and accessible attracts more - and more diverse - volunteers
  • Making volunteering easy helps clubs plan, giving them a ready pool of willing volunteers to meet their needs
  • Easier volunteering leads to more enjoyable experiences and encourages people to recommend it to others
  • Simplifying sport volunteering lets people easily opt in and out of opportunities to fit their schedules

Tip

Make it very clear via all your communication channels who to contact if someone is interested in helping.

Also, identify who volunteers should contact when they would like to vacate or change their role.

In action: Make it easy to get involved

Here's your moment to...

Work collaboratively

Try new things

Use data & insights

Ask your sponsors and local government partners to help share your volunteering opportunities

Identify the hidden skills in your membership, by including questions in your registration forms for existing players, parents and helpers

You wouldn't advertise for a paid role that lacked a description, so provide insight into what future volunteers will do and the connection to the organisation's purpose

What can this look like when done well...

It needs to be easy to find sport volunteering opportunities, and signing up to get involved. Signing up should require no prior connection to the club. It should be easy to start, stop, change roles, and recommence volunteering depending on what else is going on in the volunteer's life.
