Attitudes Towards Sport in Australia

Understanding how Australians perceive, value, and engage with sport.

Sport plays an important role in Australian life, influencing how people connect, stay active and feel part of their community.

Attitudes towards sport go beyond simply watching or playing games; they reflect views about health, inclusion, national pride and belonging. As participation trends and major events shape public interest, Australians’ relationship with sport continues to develop.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) measures what Australians’ think about sport through its Community Perceptions Monitor (CPM).

The CPM is a monthly online survey of the general community about sport and physical activity in Australia. It surveys 500 Australian residents aged 18+ each month across metropolitan and regional Australia.

Visit the Community Perceptions Monitor (CPM) page to find more results, deeper insights, and detailed reports.

Attitudes in 2024/25

The 2024/25 CPM surveyed more than 500 adults each month across metro and regional Australia. A total sample size of n=6,486 was achieved across the full year in 2024/25. This is the base unless otherwise stated.

Sample size per year

Percentages presented are based on the total number of valid responses made to the question being reported on. In most cases, results reflect those for respondents who had a view and for whom the questions were applicable. Percentage results throughout the report may not sum to exactly 100% due to rounding.

Total sample size per year:

  • 2024/25 (n=6,486)
  • 2023/24 (n=6,118)
  • 2022/23 (n=6,500)
  • 2021/22 (n=5,800)
  • 2020/21 (n=6,005)
  • 2019/20 (n=5,005)

Index scores

The CPM uses several questions to measure pride, inspiration, and the value and benefits of sport. These are combined into indices to track changes over time. The indices are scored on a 0–100 scale and reflect both how many people respond and how strongly they feel.
