In 2024-25, 81% of Australians surveyed agreed that organised sports and physical activities have a positive influence in their local community. 80% also agreed that these activities were worthy of government investment. 2
The Role of Sport
Since 2023, the number of Australians who recognise and agree with various statements about selected benefits of sport has been increasing. In 2024-25, the aspects with highest agreement included that: 2
- sport and physical activity are good for health and wellbeing (86%)
- sport can be a good way to meet people and make friends (73%)
- sport is a place people can feel a sense of belonging (68%)
- sport can help people develop useful life skills beyond just the sport skills (68%)
- Being involved in sport is a fun and enjoyable way to spend time (68%)
- People are more likely to keep up regular physical activity if they make a commitment to an organised sport activity (67%)
