Facilitation Essential Skills

What you’ll learn

Effective facilitation is not simply about presenting information. It is most effective and meaningful when it is delivered through active participation and engagement of the learning group.

An effective facilitator plays the role of a guide rather than a teacher, providing safe environments and participant centred approaches that accelerate learning. This course is designed to provide educators, facilitators, instructors and trainers with the contemporary facilitation skills and tools they require to design and deliver optimal learning environments. Module 1:

The art of facilitation

Active learning to engage

  • Identify personal strengths and areas for improvement through reflective practice
  • Apply active learning strategies to create engaging learning environments
  • Apply Push and Pull strategies to enhance your facilitation skills and effectiveness in your sessions.

Module 2:

Workshop design and preparation

The power of collaboration

  • Apply best practice techniques to create engaging workshop activities
  • Be aware of how to use tools and technology effectively to enhance learning experiences
  • Recognise the value of collaborative methods to shift the focus of education from passive knowledge transfer to active, practical application.

Module 3:

Creating a supportive workshop environment

Optimising the learning environment

  • Recognise how to create a welcoming and safe environment that fosters engagement and activates learning
  • Identify effective methods and techniques to build trust and encourage open communication.

Module 4:

Workshop delivery and adaptability

Adapting to workshop situations

  • Recognise the importance of managing group dynamics to create a balanced and inclusive workshop environment.
  • Identify effective strategies for structuring activities and handling interactions to enhance engagement and participation.
  • Identify effective questioning and listening techniques that model curiosity, enhance understanding and foster constructive discussions.
  • Identify when to adapt your approach based on participant needs and workshop objectives.

Using reflection to enhance learning

Reflection tools and practices

  • Explain the importance of reflection in learning
  • Apply various reflective techniques to facilitate deeper learning experiences and continuous improvement for your participants
  • Integrate reflective practices into your facilitation to improve session outcomes and participant engagement.

Module 6:

Facilitator action plan

Reflective practice in action learning

  • Identify the benefits of self-reflection and its critical role in your own development as a facilitator
  • Choose from a range of reflection techniques to apply when you need them
  • Integrate reflective practice into your own action plans for continual development as a facilitator.
