Understand our diverse communities

Australian Sports Commission is determined to have more Australians participating and excelling in sport, from grass-roots right up to the pinnacle of elite competition.

Communities need sporting options that celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and most importantly, make people feel like they belong.

A big step toward achieving this is to adopt an inclusive approach that harnesses the strengths of our diverse nation.

Not only does this mean we do not exclude people, but we actively create and maintain inclusive environments, in which people can participate in ways that are meaningful and appropriate for them.

Learn strategies to consciously include everyone and create an environment where the following groups can feel a sense of belonging.

  • First Nations Australians

First Nations Australians are often called Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. But there is significant diversity within these two groups.

  • LGBTIQ+ communities

The term LGBTIQ+ is often used to refer to an individual’s identity in relation to their sexual orientation or gender.

  • People with disability

A person with disability is defined as a person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.

  • Intersectionality

Intersectionality is a term that helps us to understand the multiple interacting influences of different categories of identity, including ethnicity, gender, culture, social class and age.

  • Women and girls

In Australia, women and girls are under-represented in organised sport when compared to their male counterparts.
