National Gender Equity in Sports Governance Policy

A collaboration to influence change and improve gender equity in governance and leadership across sport.

The National Gender Equity in Sports Governance Policy (the Policy) is a collaboration between the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the State and Territory Agencies for Sport and Recreation (STASR) to influence change and improve gender equity in governance and leadership across sport.

Unless otherwise exempted by the relevant Government Agency (ASC or STASR), the Policy applies to:

  • All recognised national sporting organisations and national sporting organisations for people with disability (NSO/Ds)
  • All State sporting organisations and state sporting organisations for people with disability (SSO/Ds)
  • Organisations receiving specified funding from the relevant Government Agency (e.g recognised active organisations, recreation organisations, peak bodies)

Partnering organisations:

  • Australian Capital Territory Government
  • New South Wales Government
  • Northern Territory Government
  • Queensland Government
  • South Australian Government
  • Tasmanian Government
  • Victorian Government
  • Western Australian Government

Policy and implementation support

The policy is accompanied by an implementation guide, frequently asked questions and numerous resources to assist sporting organisations to achieve the targets by the relevant timeframes.

Our Targets

Consistent with the proportion of women and gender diverse people within both the Australian population and sport participation, the ASC and STASRs have adopted Gender Equity targets for the governance of national and state level sport.

By no later than 1st July 2027, ASC and STASR desire Australian sport to have achieved:

  • 50% of all board directors are women and/or gender diverse
  • 50% of chairs/deputy chairs are women and/or gender diverse
  • 50% of specified sub-committee members are women and/or gender diverse

Whilst the overall target is to achieve gender equity across the sector, each Government Agency will adopt its own mechanism (some jurisdictions will adopt the 50/50 model whereas others will adopt the 40/40/20 model), timelines, and non-compliance measures.
